Aging in an IoT world

New solutions for Safety and Peace of Mind.

Welcoming novices and experts alike, Health Hacks RI is a design and maker fest where you will apply human-centered design approaches to solving for real world problems. This year, participants will compete to design, build and create new ideas to improve the lives of our aging population.

What Can I Expect?

What do these three days look like?

At HealthHacks you have 48 hours to choose, design, and create a solution to a plethora of opportunities in the future of an aging population. You are given the freedom to choose your team, focus, and the solution. We are here to help with mentors, resources, and support. What do the three days look like? To kick off the weekend, on Friday October 13th, participants will speedstorm (think speed-dating meets brainstorming) to form teams and focus on specific problems. We will introduce participants to the hackathon with speakers providing insight on aging and what it means for the future. You will be given a chance at the beginning to network and form your team for the weekend. Brainstorming sessions will also be held to produce preliminary ideas and help with the problem solving process. On Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th, participants will problem solve, design, and create with full access to the URI Makerspace in Carothers Library, and the URI College of Engineering’s capstone design area @Schneider Electric. Participants will develop their ideas into a presentable format for Sunday’s showcase. Pitching coaches will be available. On Sunday afternoon, each team will pitch their solutions to a panel of judges and supporters, exhibit their ideas on healthy aging and get audience feedback.

Why Participate?

This is a unique opportunity to think about real world problems in a facilitated interdisciplinary setting. You get a chance to step outside the classroom and see how your ideas, skills, and inner changemaker can be harnessed in a tangible way. You will meet students from across the state of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences. We hope that you will have valuable conversations and perhaps discover something about yourself and your passions in the process. We will have mentors representing socially focused and innovative companies in Rhode Island. You will have the chance to work with industry professionals that have dedicated their entire careers to making a difference. They are excited to work with people like you and offer input, perspective and lasting connections. We encourage you to take full advantage. Meals, snacks, and beverages will be provided free of charge. Lastly each team has the opportunity to win cash prizes, with first prize awarding $1000, second awarding $500 and third awarding $250.
